Torsdag 27. oktober 2022 arrangerer Stavanger kunstmuseum, MUST, Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design og Modern Art Oxford en konferanse i Stavanger med fokus på kunst og kreativ læring hos barn og unge.

Om konferansen

Konferansen arrangeres i forbindelse med utstillingen Ruth Asawa – Citizen of the Universe.
Målet med konferansen er å belyse kunstfagets betydning. Hvorfor er kunstfag viktig? Kan kunstfagene bidra til et bedre utdannelsesforløp og gjøre den enkelte bedre rustet til å takle framtidens oppgaver? Hvor står kunstfaget i skolen i dag? Konferansen vil belyse disse og flere aktuelle spørsmål i lys av internasjonal forskning og med Ruth Asawas kunstneriske praksis som bakteppe og inspirasjon.

Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) regnes som en av modernismens viktigste fornyere av skulptursjangeren. Mest kjent er hun for sine ståltrådskulpturer som henger fra taket og danner installasjoner i rommet. I dag er hennes hengende ståltrådskulpturer representert i de største museene i USA. Utstillingen er laget i samarbeid med Modern Art Oxford og er den første museumsutstillingen med hennes arbeider i Europa.

Asawa så verdien av å eksponer barn for kreative fag i skolen lenge før det var vanlig. Hun vektla nærheten mellom kunsten og livet og viet store deler av sin karriere til å arbeide med undervisning.

Om foredragsholderne: 

Emily Pringle/ Tate
Dr. Emily Pringle er sjef for Tate sin forskningsavdeling og forfatter av boken Rethinking Research in the Art Museum (Routledge)Hun er opprinnelig utdannet kunstner og ble ansatt i Tate i 2010 som leder for utdanning og praktisk forskning. I den rollen har hun fokusert spesielt på kunstnernes rolle i museumsundervisning og kreativ læring.

Lizzie Crump/ Cultural Learning Alliance
Lizzie Crump, Member of British Empire (MBE) er meddirektør for UK Cultural Learning Alliance (CLA), en kollektiv gruppe som jobber for å sikre at alle barn og unge har tilgang til kunst og kultur samt viktigheten av kulturell læring. CLA jobber på tvers av kultur- og utdanningssektorene, de har mer enn 3000 organisasjonsmedlemmer og 6000 individuelle medlemmer. https://culturallearningalliance.org.uk/about-us/

Mari Rege/ Universitetet i Stavanger (UiS)
Mari Rege er professor i samfunnsøkonomi ved UiS. Hun forsker på barn og unges utvikling og motivasjon for å lære. Spesielt er hun opptatt av hvordan ulike faktorer i oppveksten kan ha betydning for hvordan et barn lykkes i utdanningsløpet og senere i arbeidslivet, og hva samfunnet kan gjøre for å gi alle barn gode muligheter til å lykkes. Rege har ledet flere store forskningsprosjekt finansiert av Norges forskningsråd, og hennes forskning har blitt publisert i en rekke ledende internasjonale fagtidsskrift.

Elaine Munthe/ UiS og Astrid Guldbrandsen/ UiS
Elaine Munthe er professor i pedagogikk ved Læringsmiljøsenteret ved UiS. Hun er leder for Følgegruppen for grunnskolelærerutdanningsreformen, forsker på kvalifisering til lærerarbeidet og arbeider med hvordan lesson study kan bidra til å styrke profesjonskunnskap i lærerutdanning og grunnopplæring.

Astrid Guldbrandsen er førsteamanuensis ved Kunnskapssenter for Utdanning (KSU), UiS. Hos KSU arbeider de med systematiske kunnskapsoversikter (sammenstilling av publisert forskning) innenfor utdanningsfeltet, fra barnehage til høyere utdanning. Pågående prosjekter som Astrid er involvert i omhandler kartlegging av barnehageforskning i Norden og prosjektet om kunstens betydning i skolen. Astrid har sin utdanning innenfor biologi og biomedisin fra Universitet i Bergen og jobbet i sitt doktorgradsprosjekt bl.a. med databaseutvikling og sammenstilling av forskning på MS.

Per Normann Andersen/ Høgskolen i Innlandet/Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences
Per Normann Andersen er professor i spesialpedagogikk ved institutt for psykologi ved HINN. Han forsker på betydningen av hjernens eksekutive funksjoner for læring, emosjonell funksjon og livskvalitet. Videre er han engasjert i prosjektet Kunsten å Lære (Art of Learning), som ser på hvordan kunst og kulturaktiviteter som en integrert del av skolens læreplan kan fremme barns eksekutive funksjoner.

Join us on Thursday, 27 October 2022, for a conference themed on art and children’s and young people’s creative learning. The conference is organised by Stavanger Art Museum, MUST, the National Museum in Oslo and Modern Art Oxford.

About the conference

The conference is organised in connection with the exhibition Ruth Asawa – Citizen of the Universe. The conference goal is to shed light on the significance of art as part of school curriculum. Why is it important? Can the artistic disciplines contribute to improving a pupil’s educational progression and result in the individual being better equipped to tackle future tasks and challenges? What is the status of the artistic disciplines in schools today? The conference will address these and other relevant questions in light of international research and with Ruth Asawa’s artistic practice as a backdrop and source of inspiration.

Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) is considered one of Modernism’s most important innovators in the genre of sculpture. She is most well-known for her steel wire sculptures that hang from the ceiling and create installations in space. Today, her hanging steel-wire sculptures are found in the largest museums in the USA. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Modern Art Oxford and is the first museum exhibition of Asawa’s works in Europe.

Asawa saw the value of exposing children to creative disciplines in school long before it was common to do so. She emphasised a close connection between art and life and devoted much of her career to teaching. This focus on creative learning is part of the backstory for why, back in 2017, we started planning an exhibition of Asawa’s works. You can read more about the exhibition on the museum’s webpages:

About the lecturers

Emily Pringle / Tate in London
Dr. Emily Pringle is the Head of Research at Tate. She is also the author of the book Rethinking Research in the Art Museum (Routledge). Having initially trained as an artist, Pringle was hired by the Tate in 2010 as the Head of Learning Practice and Research. During her time at Tate, she has focused particularly on the role of artists in museum learning-and-engagement programmes and on creative learning.

Lizzie Crump / Cultural Learning Alliance
Lizzie Crump is a Visiting Engagement Fellow at Kings College London and is the UK Strategic Lead at What Next?; a national cultural movement which brings people together to debate and shape the future of the arts and culture in the UK. From 2010 – 2022 she was the Co-Director of the Cultural Learning Alliance (CLA), a collective voice working to ensure that all children and young people have meaningful access to culture, Lizzie is passionate about creating new ways of working and thinking; about partnership, conversation and collaboration. Lizzie has worked for a local authority, for Arts Council England, as Cultural Advisor to Partnerships for Schools (now part of the Department of Education), as an associate with the Innovation Unit and as a freelance consultant. She was the 2011/12 Clore Leadership Learning Fellow, and is a governor of Leyton Sixth Form College. During the pandemic of 2021, she received an MBE for services to the arts.

Mari Rege / University of Stavanger, UiS
Mari Rege is a professor of economics at the University of Stavanger (UiS). She does research on children’s and young people’s development and motivation to learn. She is especially interested in how various factors in childhood can be important for how a child succeeds in his or her educational path, also later on in working life, and what society can do to give all children good possibilities to succeed. Rege has led several large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway. Her research has been published in several leading international journals for the fields of economics, psychology and human resources.

Elaine Munthe / UiS, and Astrid Guldbrandsen / UiS
Elaine Munthe is a professor of pedagogy at the Centre for Learning Environment, UiS. In addition to leading a follow-up group for Norwegian grade school-teacher education reforms, she does research on teacher qualification and on how lesson study can contribute to strengthening profession knowledge in teacher training and basic grade school education.

Astrid Guldbrandsen is an associate professor at the Knowledge Centre for Education (KSU), UiS. Part of KSU’s mandate is to carry out research syntheses for the whole education sector in Norway, from early childhood through higher education. Ongoing projects which Guldbrandsen is involved in concern mapping research on kindergartens in the Nordic countries, and a project about the significance of art in schools. Guldbrandsen’s educational background is in biology and biomedicine at the University of Bergen. In her PhD project, she worked partly with database development and syntheses of research on multiple sclerosis.

Per Normann Andersen / Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, HINN
Per Normann Andersen is a professor of special needs education at the Department of Psychology, HINN. He does research on the importance of the brain’s executive functions for learning, emotional functioning, and quality of life. He is also involved in the project Art of Learning (Kunsten å lære), which deals with how art and cultural activities as an integrated part of the school’s curriculum can promote children’s executive functions.
